PREFACE.
To the Mayor, Aldermen, and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Woohvich.
Me. Mayor and Gentlemen,
I have much pleasure in presenting you with my Seventh
Annual Report on the Health of the Borough, and the means
taken for promoting the same. It includes my Sixteenth Annual
Report on the Health of Plumstead Parish.
It is satisfactory to be able to report once more that the
lowest death-rate recorded occurred in the past year. Poverty
and distress have lately been widespread, and must necessarily
have diminished the resistance to disease ; but in spite of this,
the general health continues to improve. The steady fall in the
death-rate from infectious diseases is particularly encouraging.
Special consideration has been given in this report to the
following subjects:—(1) Home Isolation of Scarlet Fever, and
missed cases of this disease. (2) Phthisis (results of Sanatorium
treatment). (3) Notification of Zymotic Enteritis. (4) Infants'
Milk Depot—see Appendix. (5) Health-visiting re Infant Mortality—see
Miss FitzGerald's Report.
My thanks are due to the Chairman and Members of the
Committee for the courtesy with which they have received the
recommendations regarding the public health, which it is my
duty to make from time to time.
I am, Mr. Mayor and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
SIDNEY DA VIES.
May, 1908.
