underground rooms.
38. No underground rooms, separately occupied, were found
not in accordance with the Act.
Factories, Workshops, and Workplaces.
39. There were, at the close of the year, 221 (215 in 1906)
workshops and workplaces on the register. 286 inspections were
made, and 40 notices served and complied with. 28 factories
were inspected regarding the sanitary accommodation, and four
notices served and complied with. 360 inspections of homeworkers'
premises were made, and 40 notices sent and attended to.
Miss Middlebrooke devoted a large amount of her time to the
inspection of workshops and factories where women are employed ;
46 new workrooms were measured and put on the register.
Factories and workshops, where no females are employed, are
inspected by Mr. Powell.
40. A special report on home-work was presented to your
Council on October 31st, 1906, and printed in the Annual Report
of that year.
Bakehouses.
41. The number of bakehouses on the register is now 56, 25
being underground. They were all inspected twice. In my
personal inspections, I found all but four satisfactory; in these
the defects were chiefly dirty floors, walls, and mixing-boards.
These were remedied on service of notice.
Ice-cream Shops.
42. Seventy-six Ice-cream shops were on the register at the
close of the year, compared with 83, 87, and 68 in the three
previous years. There were 219 inspections made, and 3 notices
