Nuisances.
(See Table XVa.).
16. 366 complaints of sanitary defects were received and
investigated, compared with 457, 380, and 498 in the three
preceding years.
43 complaints of non-removal of dust were made and attended
to, compared with 42, 40, and 43 in the three preceding years.
2 of the dust complaints came from Woolwich Parish, 22 from
Plumstead, and 19 from Eltham.
The dust in Woolwich is collected by your Council's employees,
but that in Plumstead and Eltham by two different contractors.
17. Drains and Water-closets. Twenty-nine defective combined
drains were investigated, and reported on, by the Chief
Sanitary Inspector, compared with 22, 26, and 25 in the three
preceding years.
These drains affected 236 houses.
451 private drains, found choked and defective, were examined,
cleared, and relaid, compared with 573, 590, and 557 in the three
preceding years. The majority were found in the River Ward.
1131 water-closets and w.c.-cisterns were repaired, compared
with 1498, 1278, and 931, in the three preceding years. 175 foul
w.c.-pans were cleansed by tenants, compared with 231, 247, and
160 in the three preceding years.
18. Ventilation of the New Outfall Sewers. During the past
year repeated complaints were received as to offensive odours
proceeding from the road-level ventilators on the new L.C.C. outfall
sewers where they pass through the Borough. The L.C.C.
had previously been asked to provide some system of ventilation
which would obviate nuisance, but they replied that when nuisance
did occur it would be time enough to take steps to deal with it.
