One sample was adulterated with 152 per cent. of water, and
one had 20 per cent. of fat abstracted; the fine inflicted in the
latter case was £30.
9. Of the 346 milk samples, 81 were taken on Sunday or
Bank Holidays, and 2, or 2.5 per cent., were found adulterated.
In 1905, 11 per cent. of samples taken on Sunday were found
adulterated; and in 1906, 6.3 per cent.
10. A record is now kept of all analyses of milk made by the
Public Analyst. The average percentage of fat in all unadulterated
samples taken last year was 3.6, and of non-fatty solids 8.8. From
9 to 18 samples were taken of the milk supplied by each of six
large retailers; the average of unadulterated samples for each
firm only varied from 3.5 to 3.7 per cent. of fat, and from 8.7 to
8.9 non-fatty solids.
food inspection.
11. The inspection of meat and other food received particular
attention, and the same arrangements were in force as described
in previous reports.
There was one seizure, and 59 surrenders. The seizure was
of 33 unsound kippers; these were condemned by a magistrate,
and destroyed. The owner was cautioned.
Of the surrenders, 7 were tuberculous, 20 unsound, and 19
livers or other organs affected with parasitic disease.
The meat affected with tuberculosis was pork in all cases.
The food surrendered as unsound consisted of meat, fish and
fruit, and three butts of Guinness's Stout which had been sunk
in the river. A full list is given in Table XIX.
A special report on the existing provisions against the sale of
unsound and diseased meat was presented and printed in your
Council's Minutes of 25th January, 1906.
