" water is still impure as compared with other Kent waters
" owing to the well being pumped to too great an extent.
"Probably the Borough is mainly supplied with water
" from this well. It is, therefore, desirable that the Water
" Board should be requested to take steps to improve the
" quality of the Plumstead well water, or to provide the
" Borough with a new source which would be at least
"equal in quality to the average of the Kent waters."
As a result of this report the Water Examinations Committee of
the Board instructed their officers to make an enquiry into the
condition of the Plumstead well water. They have not yet
informed your Council as to the results of the enquiry.
The Plumstead well yields far the hardest water supplied in
the Metropolis. A report on a proposal for softening the Kent
water was presented in November, 1907, to the Public Health and
Housing Committee, and printed in the Council's minutes.
The supply is constant throughout the Borough with the
exception of houses on Shooter's Hill (including Eglinton Road
above Genesta Road, Brent Road, Dallin Road, Plum Lane above
Dallin Road, and all houses above Red Lion Lane), which have an
intermittent water-supply only.
2. Three tenement houses were found to have insufficient
water-supply for each of the families occupying them (see Annual
Report, 1904, page 59, and Appendix II.). An additional tap and
sink were supplied on at least one upper floor at each of these
houses. Altogether eighteen tenement houses have now been
fitted with an additional supply, under the Public Health (London)
Act, Sec. 48.
Under the London County Council (General Powers) Act, 1907,
a suitable water-supply can be required on each separately
occupied floor of a tenement house. This Act has now come into
force and will facilitate the provision of proper water-supply in
lodging-houses.
