weighed, but only 7 came two or more times. Of these, 3 gained
more than the average, 2 gained the average weight, and 2 less than
the average.
Three children found to be losing, or not gaining average weight
on the breast, were put on Depot milk and while taking it gained at
least the average.
B.S. was twice put on Depot milk and twice taken off and fed on
milk and barley water, as generally directed for hand-fed children.
She was brought regularly to be weighed all through and while
taking Depot milk she gained more than the average, but while
taking the ordinary milk and barley water she gained less than
the average.
A.B. was found to be gaining very little weight on the breast—
much below the average ; he was given a half supply of Depot milk
and then gained more than the average weight.
143 of the total cases fed were not brought to be weighed at all or
not more than once. These were all visited by Miss FitzGerald and
in most cases found to be progressing satisfactorily. It may be
safely concluded that those who persisted with Depot milk but did
not come to be weighed, progressed at least as satisfactorily as
those who were brought to the Depot.
Diarrhcea in Depot-Fed Infants. Although Depot-fed infants
are much less liable to diarrhcea than other hand-fed children, they
are like breast-fed babies, not entirely exempt from attack by this
disease.
Only four eases of diarrhcea among these children were notified,
of which two died. In two of these cases, including one that died,
the regulations were not carried out. The following are the full
particulars obtained by Miss FitzGerald:—
S.M., born November 4th, 1906 ; started Depot milk November 5tli,
1906 ; was a healthy child and did extremely well on the
milk. Notilied as suffering from zymotic enteritis on July 24th,
1907 ; house very clean and sanitary condition satisfactory ;
mother very careful and intelligent; she stated that the baby
had an occasional crust in addition to Depot milk. Child
recovered and soon regained its normal state of health. On
