Alcoholism.
110. There were 5 deaths from alcoholism, and 22 certified
as cirrhosis of the liver, making a total of 27 deaths actually
caused by alcohol, compared with 52, 40 and 42 in the three
preceding years. The recent reduction in alcoholism is
probably to a large extent an indication of the poverty that has
prevailed in the Borough during the last two years; but it
may be hoped that some of the improvement is due to recent
legislation and to public enlightenment as to the evils of
intemperance.
In addition to the above deaths, there were 335 deaths from
diseases of the brain, nervous system, heart, blood vessels and
kidneys, of which a large proportion were certainly caused
directly or indirectly by alcohol. The deaths from these causes
in 1903 were 313.
