Appendix I.
Report on the area embracing Barnfield Place, Barnfield Road,
Princes Road, Brookhill Row, Portland Place and May
Place.
This is an area in the South-west part of Plumstead, consisting
largely of some of the oldest houses in the parish. The
population as obtained by a house to house inspection was 960
consisting of 305 adult males, 310 adult females, and 439
children under 10 years of age. ' There are 187 houses, containing
807 rooms and 215 families. There are thus 5'1 persons
to a house, 1*2 persons to a room.
The adjoining Table A gives the principal vital statistics,
Table B giving a comparison with Plumstead and Reidhaven
Road.
Of the 187 houses in the district I inspected 153, with the
following result.
No separate water supply 13
No separate W.C. 10
Insufficient air space in front 3
,, „ behind 5
Dilapidations 43
Dirty rooms or passage 79
Overcrowding 25
Damp walls 30
Rooms dark or insufficiently ventilated 13
Defective "W.C.s 28
Stopped drains 2
Indecency of sleeping arrangements 7
Yards unpaved or insufficiently paved 11
Rain water pipes and gutters defective 9
Accumulations—offensive 2
Dark and unventilated staircases 2
Dirty tenants 3
These defects have for the most part been remedied; the
8 houses with insufficient air space in front or behind could
only be treated by closing order, and I did not think their
condition bad enough to justify this.
