Surveyor's Report upon the cost of disposal cf Refuse at the Destructor,
Dockyard Wharf.
7th June, 1898.
Gentlemen,
I have much pleasure in presenting my Fifth Annual Report of the working
of the Refuse Destructor for the period of one year ending December 2nd 1897.
The quantity of Refuse that passed through the cells during that period
amounted to 10,637 loads equal to 26,592 cubic yards.
The cost of the disposal of which, under the old system of barging away at
is. 6d. per cubic yard, would have been (calculating each load to represent 2½ cubic
yards) £1,994 8s. od.
591 tons (estimated) of Fishmongers' and Butchers' Offal were also destroyed
during the year, being an increase of 27 tons upon the quantity destroyed last year.

The outgoings of the Destructor, including Capital and Interest on Loans, Wages, Breeze for Cremator, Gas, Water and other expenses were, as follows:—

275 loads of residuum were given to the London County Council for making
roadways at the Allotment Gardens, Plumstead. 148 loads more of residuum were
given to the London County Council for making up footpaths, North Woolwich
Gardens. 50 loads were given to Mr. Murray to make up right of way Powis Street.
The Destructor was erected on land belonging to the Board, and the value of
such land is not included in the above statement.
