their deliveries to a weekly average of 923 meals to homebound old
people. Eight of the old people's clubs, which include luncheon
clubs among their facilities, provided an average of 665 meals each
week.
A Chiropody service is provided by the Stepney Old People's
Welfare Association at clinics situated in five of the old people's
clubs in the Borough, and an average of 278 treatments including
domiciliary treatments were given each month during the year.
This year saw the completion of the first project of the Stepney
Old People's Housing Association Ltd., namely the provision of eleven
units of accommodation for single and married old persons, and accommodation
for a caretaker, obtained by acquisition of the lease and
the conversion of Nos.27 and 28 Tredegar Square which were formerly
requisitioned by the Council. The Council assisted in the project
with an interest free loan of £6,700.
As a frontispiece to this report there is a photograph of a
former 17th century almshouse chapel in the Borough, opened this year
by the County Council as a Rehabilitation Centre for handicapped persons.
AMBULANCE FACILITIES
The London County Council is responsible under Section 27 of the
National Health Service Act, 1946, for the provision of Ambulance
transport within the administrative County of London.
