Infant Mortality
Deaths of Infants under one year numbered 33, giving a rate of
17.82 per 1,000 live births, the lowest ever recorded -as is the rate
(21.4) for England and Wales.
The tables on page 60 show the deaths from stated causes at various
ages under one year, together with comparative figures over the last
five years.
Perinatal Mortality
The perinatal mortality rate of infants (viz. still-births plus
deaths occurring in the first week of life) was 30.72 as compared with
36.78 last year.
Neonatal Mortality
During the year there were 24 deaths of infants under four weeks
old, representing a neonatal mortality rate of ,12.96. Last year there
were 32 neonatal deaths, the rate being 17.17.
Maternal Mortality
There were no maternal deaths during the year.
Accidental Deaths
The number of deaths due to accidents was 31, or nine less than
last year. These included 9 due to motor vehicles (one more than in
the previous year); 9 in the home; 1 at work; 1 from drowning, and
11 due to various other causes. (See Table 2 on page 59 relating to
Road Accidents.)
Unemployment
The Ministry of Labour has kindly supplied me with the following
information as to the estimated number of persons residing in the
Borough who were registered as unemployed at the end of the year

The total number of unemployed at the end of 1961 was 1,497.
