Temporary Hutments.
One hundred and six hutments owned by the Borough Council remained
at the end of the year. Thirteen hutments were recommended for demolition
because of structural deterioration.
Requisitioned Premises.
The number of dwellings under requisition by the Borough Council at
the end of the year was 799, involving 1,198 lettings. Eight basement
rooms in requisitioned dwellings which did not comply with the regulations
were recommended for closure.
New Housing.
During the year 329 new dwellings were completed in the Borough
127 by the Borough Council, 193 by the County Council, and 9 by private
enterprise. (See Appendix, page 67 ).
A total of 5,317 view permanent dwellings has been constructed in the
Borough since the war - 3,258 by the London County Council, 1,983 by the
Borough Council, and 76 by private enterprise.
Continuing its work of comprehensive reconstruction in Stepney and
Poplar, the County Council has been engaged for some time, in active
co-operation with the Borough Council, in the development of a new
neighbourhood unit to be known as "St.Anne's". Situated in Limehouse
to the west of the Lansbury neighbourhood, St.Anne's covers 42 acres
and provides for a planned population of 2,220 persons. It lies
generally within the area bounded by the railway, Burdett Road, The Cut
and Commercial Road and, when completed, will include 441 flats and 150
maisonettes and houses as well as a shopping centre. Provision has also
been made in the reconstruction scheme for church and school sites,
licensed premises, a new road and an extensive open space. From a town
planning and housing point of view, the new neighbourhood is likely to
have, like Lansbury, considerable interest and significance. The County
Council held a naming ceremony on the site on 28th February, when the
Worshipful the Mayor of Stepney (Alderman J. Sambrook, J.P.) unveiled a
commemorative tablet.
Statistics.
A summary of inspections made by the Housing Inspector is given in
Table 17 on page 71, and further housing statistics will be found on
