Preferential Housing on Health Grounds,
Of the 86 cases investigated, 49 were recommended for
rehousing: 1 to the County Council and 48 to the Borough
Council.
Temporary Hutments.
203 hutments owned by the Borough Council remained at
the end of the year, 41 were recommended for demolition
because of structural deterioration.
Requisitioned Properties.
The number of dwellings under requisition by the Borough
Council at the end of the year was 1,692, involving 2,371
lettings, 2 dwellings were recommended to the Housing
Manager for derequisitioning for various reasons, and 23
basement rooms which did not comply with the regulations were
recommended for closure, • . —-
Demolition Orders*
Under the provisions of Soction 11 of the Housing Act,
1936, 6 Demolition Orders were made during the year. Appeals
were lodged in two cases, one being upheld by the Court on
the undertaking of the applicant to use the premises for
storage accommodation only, and the other also upheld as the
Court considered the house could be made fit at reasonable
cost, in spite of the estimated cost (£1200) to make the
premises fit being more than twice the agreed value of the
house,
Under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions)
Act, 1953, the Council may. if it is inexpedient to make a
Demolition Order under Section 11 of the Housing Act, 1936,
having regard to the effect of demolition of the house upon
any other house or building, make a Closing Order in lieu
thereof. The Council may also at any time revoke the Closing
Order and make a Demolition Order. It was not found
necessary to take any action under this provision this year.
Immigration into the Borough and Coloured Persons.
Although many Stepney residents leave the Borough in the
course of the year to take up residence elsewhere, there is
evidence of increased migration into the Borough, not only
from other parts of the United Kingdom, but also from the
colonies of the West Indies and West Africa and from India
and Pakistan,
