SWIMMING. BATHS.
The three swimming baths in the Borough are Council
Baths. During the year the number of swims amounted to
98,588 comprising 22,956 adults, 30,220 juveniles ;and ,,
45ยป412 schoolchildren receiving L.C.C. swimming instruction.
The wdter ris subjected to continuous chlorination ,and
filtration and samples are taken periodically for analysis.
Efforts have been made, through the education authority
and elsewhere to obtain details of the percentage of
Stepney children who are able to swim by the time they
reach school leaving age. Apparently such statistics are
not kept.
In view of the number of drowning accidents which
occur each summer to non swimmers or poor swimmers It is
regrettable that, with all the opportunities now available,
so many physically fit children reach adult age without
being able to swim. Not infrequently good swimmers lbse
their lives trying to save those who cannot swim.
