I.—STATISTICS AND SOCIAL CONDITIONS
OF THE AREA.
Population.—The estimate of the Registrar-General to the mid-year 1939
is 197,200 for birth rate and 183,600 for death rate.
Births.—The total number of live births of Stepney residents during the
year was 2,466—1,309 males and 1,157 females—or 153 less than in the
previous year. The birth-rate was 12.5 per 1,000 of the population.
Marriages.—The total number of marriages which took place during the
year was 2,629, or 512 more than in the previous year.
The proportion of persons married was 26.2 per 1,000 of the population.
