Offences other than Adulteration.
Milk.—3 unregistered vendors were fined £1 with £1 1s. 0d. costs, £1, and
£2 with £1 1s. Od. costs, respectively. The unregistered vendor of adulterated
sample C 76 was fined £1.
For selling pasteurised milk without a licence one vendor was fined £2
with £2 2s. Od. costs and in another case the summons was dismissed under
the Probation of Offenders Act, the vendor paying £1 1s. 0d. costs.
Butter.—The vendor of adulterated sample B 368 was fined £5 for
obstruction.
Ice Cream.—One unregistered vendor was discharged under the Probation
of Offenders Act and paid £1 1s. Od. costs.
Margarine.—One vendor was fined £1 for a labelling offence.
Cream.—For filling bottles with cream on unregistered premises one
vendor was fined £2 with £2 2s. Od. costs.
Miscellaneous Samples.—152 miscellaneous samples were submitted for
analysis. These include 4 cowshed samples. Of the remaining 148 samples,
120 were foods, and of these, 21 or 17.5 per cent, were unsatisfactory. The
samples were submitted by:—
Public Health Department.—130 samples submitted by the Public
Health Department comprised the following :—
Metallic Contamination.—37 samples were examined and of these, 4
were unsatisfactory.
Satisfactory samples were:—Tinned Tomatoes (12) and Tomato
Puree (6) examined for copper. (Port Medical Officers have agreed that
not more than 100 parts per million of copper should be permitted in
tomato products from 1st January, 1939.). Meat Extract (5), Tinned
Herrings (4), Tinned Plums (2), Tinned Salmon (2) and Tinned Oranges (1),
examined for tin. Grapes (1) examined for arsenic.
Unsatisfactory samples were:—Tinned Herrings (4) (contained 2.2,
2.6, 3.1 and 2.5 grains tin per pound respectively).
Preservatives.—53 samples were examined and of these 4 were
unsatisfactory.
Satisfactory samples were:—Tinned Tomatoes (5), Tinned Peas (2),
Liquid Egg (2) and Mint Salad Cream. These were free from preservative.
Other satisfactory samples which contained preservative in amount less
than the permitted quantity were:—Sultanas (24), Raisins (14) and
Strawberry Pulp (1).
Unsatisfactory samples were:—Grape Fruit Juice (2), Pearl Barley (1)
and Sultanas (1) (contained 700, 730, 25 and 928 parts sulphur dioxide
respectively).
Fit for Food.—18 samples were examined with regard to their fitness
for human consumption. 9 of these samples were unsatisfactory.
Satisfactory samples were:—Self-Raising Flour (2), Condensed Milk
(2), Milk (2), Vinegar Essence (1), Wine (1) and Tinned Brisling (1).
