Ground Ginger.—9 samples of ground ginger were analysed and of these,
4 samples were adulterated.
B 644 and B 646 (Informal). Deficient in water soluble constituents
B 689. Deficient in water soluble constituents. Vendor cautioned.
B 690. Deficient in water soluble constituents. Vendor cautioned.
A sample taken on delivery to one vendor was satisfactory.
Sago.—Out of three samples of sago examined, 1 sample, C 455 (Informal),
consisted of tapioca.
Sausage.—Of 11 samples of sausage examined, 1 sample was found to be
adulterated.
A 83. Pork Sausage. Contained 22 parts sulphur dioxide per million
without declaration or notice of the presence of preservative. Vendor
cautioned.
Suet.—7 samples of shredded suet were analysed and of these, 1 sample
was adulterated.
C 178 (Informal). Contained 10.7 per cent, of starch without declaration.
Vinegar.—Of 7 samples of vinegar examined, 2 samples were found to be
adulterated.
C 371 (Informal). Consisted entirely of artificial vinegar.
C 398 (Same vendor as C 371). Consisted entirely of artificial vinegar.
Vendor cautioned.
In Sutton v. Tame, the County of London Sessions Appeal Committee on
15th June, 1937, decided that "to sell a substance as vinegar or table vinegar
without any qualification or explanation as to its origin being given by the
seller to the purchaser implies that the substance sold is produced by a process
of fermentation."
According to this decision if artificial vinegar is supplied when vinegar is
asked for, it must be shown by label or declaration that the vinegar is a nonbrewed
product. Before this decision most of the vinegar sold in the Borough
consisted of artificial vinegar, i.e., diluted acetic acid coloured with caramel.
Drugs.—Of 127 drugs analysed, 17 or 13.4 per cent, failed to comply
with the requirements of the British Pharmacopoeia and were returned as
adulterated.
Ammoniated Quinine Tablets.
B 726 (Informal). 4.7 per cent deficient in quinine sulphate and 47.8 per
cent, deficient in ammonia.
B 727 (Informal). 31.1 per cent, deficient in quinine sulphate and 61.1
per cent, deficient in ammonia.
B 728 (Informal). 5.8 per cent, deficient in quinine sulphate and 93.3
per cent, deficient in ammonia.
B 729 (Informal). 36.8 per cent, deficient in quinine sulphate and 83.3
per cent, deficient in ammonia.
B 797. 61.2 per cent, deficient in ammonia. Vendor cautioned.
B 799. 33.7 per cent, deficient in quinine sulphate and 61.2 per cent,
deficient in ammonia. Vendor fined £2 with £1 1s, Od. costs,
