Encephalitis Lethargica.— No cases were notified during the year. 2
deaths occurred, the death-rate being .009.
Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis.— 9 patients were notified during the year, of
which 8 died. The death rate for the whole Borough was .03 per 1,000 of
the population.
Measles.— 59 cases were notified. There were no deaths.
Polio-encephalitis.— There were 2 cases notified. Both of which died in
hospital.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.— There were 14 cases notified as against 12 in
the previous year. 12 cases were removed to hospital.
Puerperal Fever and Puerperal Pyrexia.— 7 cases of puerperal fever and
33 cases of puerperal pyrexia were notified during the year, or 2 more than
in the previous year. All these cases were duly investigated and there were
5 deaths. 39 cases were removed to hospital.
Pneumonia Malaria and Dysentery Regulations.— 276 cases of Pneumonia,
and 28 of Dysentery were notified under the Regulations during the year.
There were 171 deaths from Pneumonia, or 10 less than in the previous year.
99 of these were in persons over 45 years of age. No cases of Malaria were
notified.
Wrong Diagnosis.— 109 cases of infectious diseases removed to hospital
were found not to be suffering from the disease stated on the certificate.
Of these, 10 were cases of scarlet fever, 92 of Diphtheria, 4 of Dysentery
and 3 of Poliomyelitis, 50 cases were notified by private practitioners and
59 were from public institutions.
Food Poisoning.— 10 cases were notified, or 2 more than in the previous
year.
