A departure from the usual practice of sending citrous fruit in cases was
the sending of some trucks of Sicilian Bitter Oranges in bulk. It was thought
that this would possibly damage the fruit, but consignments arrived in sound
and wholesome condition.
A first consignment of Italian Strawberries preserved in sulphur dioxide,
arrived during May. A sample was taken and submitted for analysis and
the preservative content found to be within the permissible limit.
A first and experimental consignment of Hungarian Strawberries in a
specially constructed container, refrigerated by means of dry card ice (solidified
carbon di-oxide) arrived on 10th June. The consignment consisted of 3,500
small packages weighing 1 ton 9 cwts. Owing, I am informed, to the delay
in transit, the Strawberries were not in a good condition and it was found
necessary to destroy 1,410 boxes.
Greek Grapes began to arrive in August and regular consignments were
subsequently received generally in very good condition.
On 1st November, a consignment of 473 packages of Bulgarian Grapes
arrived in a wasty condition. These were allowed to go to the London Fruit
Exchange for sorting under supervision.
The final consignment of soft fruit arrived on 10th November.
During the month of December, a large quantity of Poultry, chiefly
Turkeys, arrived from various countries in a sound, wholesome condition.
