The number of inspections made to outworkers' premises was 597, and
the number of premises where sanitary defects were found to exist was 322.
Notifiable infectious disease occurred in 71 outworkers' premises.
There are 89 firms in the Borough employing outworkers, and of these
firms 82 sent in lists twice in the year and 7 once. These related to a net
number of 1,580 outworkers, of which 951 were resident in the Borough and
629 were transferred to other Districts.
In addition, 385 lists relating to a net number of 1,392 outworkers were
received from other Boroughs during the year.

There are 1,722 factories and 362 workplaces in the Borough.
Rag Flock Acts.—24 inspections were made during the year to 8 premises
subject to the provisions of the Rag Flock Acts.
Cowsheds.—There are 17 cowsheds in the Borough. During the year 128
inspections were made to the cowsheds, and it was found necessary to serve
19 notices for minor matters.
Offensive Businesses.—There are 51 authorised Offensive Businesses in
the Borough, i.e., 1 Knacker's Yard, 1 Soap Boiler, 2 Tripe Boilers, 5 Dressers
of Fur Skins and 42 Slaughterers of Poultry. 338 inspections were made to
these premises during the year and 18 notices were served for minor matters.
10 persons were licensed under the Slaughter of Animals Act, 1933, as
Slaughtermen at a Knacker's Yard in the Borough.
Slaughterhouses.—There are no slaughterhouses, other than those used
for poultry, in the Borough.
Lodging Houses.—There are 16 common lodging houses. 258 inspections
were carried out during the year and 15 notices were served for various defects
found to exist.
The usual annual census of persons in Common Lodging Houses was
taken on the night of Friday the 11th February and the following information
ascertained:—
