Houses Let in Lodgings.—There are 3,356 houses let in lodgings. It
became necessary to serve 986 "intimations" for contravention of the
byelaws, and to institute legal proceedings in seven instances.
Rent and Mortgage Interest Restrictions Acts.—82 applications for certificates
as to houses not being in a reasonable state of repair were received, 69
of them were granted, 11 were refused and 2 were withdrawn. 26 applications
were received for reports that the work mentioned on certificates already
issued had been satisfactorily executed, 16 were granted and 10 were refused.
Water Certificates.—Certificates were granted under the provisions of the
Public Health (London) Acts as to dwelling houses having a proper and
sufficient supply of water with respect to 13 houses and 437 tenements.
Hairdressers' Shops.—Annual certificates are granted respecting Hairdressers'
Shops in the Borough, which come up to a certain standard of
cleanliness. Four certificates were granted during the year.
Mortuary and Shelter.—The number of bodies deposited in the Mortuary
during the year was 342.
42 Jewish bodies were officially "watched." 166 inquests were held in
the Coroner's Court, and 235 post mortem examinations were made.
The shelter is used for the accommodation of contacts of infectious disease
while their homes are being disinfected. It was not found necessary to
admit any persons during the year.
