The construction of the Incinerator for the destruction of old furniture
and effects left by outgoing tenants from slum clearance areas, was completed
during the year and came into operation on the 16th June. Arrangements
have been made with the Public Cleansing Officer whereby a dust-van calls
immediately after the departure of the furniture van to remove any old
furniture, etc., that may be left by the tenants who are being rehoused. The
signature of the tenant, consenting to the removal and destruction, is always
obtained in the first place. This service is welcomed by the tenants who
much prefer to have the articles destroyed rather than leave them behind.
By the inauguration of this scheme, a definite attempt is being made
to curtail the supply and sale of infested articles often of little value or even
worthless, to second-hand dealers.
The total amount of old furniture, etc., destroyed was 30 tons 18f cwts.
From this a quantity of scrap metal (bedsteads, etc.) amounting to 4 tons
14£ cwts. was salved and disposed of to a scrap-metal merchant at a price
of £3 10s. Od.
