Slum
Clearance.
IV.—HOUSING.
During the year the Council made compulsory purchase orders as follows:
Houses.
Persons to be
displaced.
Beccles Street Area No. 2 18 122
Beccles Street Area No. 3 5 52
An inquiry was held by the Ministry of Health and both orders were confirmed
without modification.
The London County Council also passed Clearance Order resolutions in
respect of the following areas within the Borough:—
Houses.
Persons to be
displaced.
Waley Street No. 2 Area 8 49
James Street Area (part in Stepney) 4 20
Malay Street Area 128 918
Owing to the difficulties and unavoidable delays which the Council
experienced in providing rehousing accommodation, it was not possible to
represent further areas.
It must also be appreciated that the activities of the London County
Council have been restricted from the same cause.
Although the rate of slum clearance in the Borough must necessarily
be slow, having regard to the many difficulties which the problem presents,
it is evident, having regard to the rebuilding schemes in hand and contemplated,
that the progress will be considerably accelerated in the near future,
