an effort is made to ascertain, so far as it is possible, whether any of the deaths
could have been avoided.
The deaths this year were attributable to the following causes:—.
Three associated with septic conditions:
(a) Ruptured womb and kidney trouble.
(b) Septic infection following a miscarriage.
(c) Septic infection following the birth of the child.
Two cases were non.septic:
(d) Chronic rheumatic heart disease.
(e) Acute heart failure and collapse of lungs.
Of the above five deaths, in two cases the patients failed to send for
medical assistance early enough. Had earlier medical attention been obtained
these deaths might possibly have been averted. Two deaths were unavoidable.
One death was doubtfully avoidable but the general condition of the patient
was poor.
None of the deaths appear definitely to have been associated with criminal
abortion.
