Cowsheds.
There is a considerable reduction in the number of cows kept in cowsheds in
the Borough due to the large increase in the price of cows in recent years, and the
increased cost of fodder and labour. The keeping of cows in a Borough such as
that of Stepney may have its advantages but the system is an uneconomical one
to say the least of it. Cows are kept in the cowsheds for about a year and are then
slaughtered. Some of them are such excellent milkers that it is a pity to have them
destroyed. The milk produced by cows in London cowsheds is fresher and probably
cleaner than country milk. The cowsheds are cleaner, lighter, better ventilated,
and are subject to inspection by our Sanitary Inspectors as well as by the Inspectors
of the London County Council.
