Factories and Workshops.
The total number of workshops on the Register was 2,827 ; but this does not
include factories, workplaces and out-workers' premises.
3,534 inspections to factories, workshops and workplaces revealed defects,
which necessitated the service of 1,100 written notices. 65 of the notices referred
to factories, 1,016 to workshops including workshop laundries, and 19 to workplaces
other than out-workers' premises.
Cleanliness.—542 notices were served to cleanse workshops.
Ventilation.—The ventilation of 56 workshops was improved.
Overcrowding.—Overcrowding was abated in 16 workshops.
Sanitary Accommodation.—The sanitary accommodation was improved in
238 workshops by providing additional and suitable water-closets.
351 other nuisances were remedied in workshops.
Out-workers' Premises.—1,095 inspections were made to out-workers' premises
during the year; 186 premises were found to be insanitary, and 305 cases of
notifiable infectious diseases occurred therein.
