That is, milk is supplied free if the income does not exceed 16s. per week after
deducting the rent where there is only one in the family, such as an expectant
mother. The scale is 13s. after deducting rent if there are two in the family, etc.
Milk is not supplied in excess of 3 pints to any one family unless there are
special circumstances warranting it. It is not supplied to expectant mothers
before the seventh month of pregnancy unless specially recommended. All possible
steps are taken to verify incomes by communicating with the employers. We also
inquire whether milk is supplied by other bodies, e.g., as the Board of Guardians,
Charity Organisation Society, Pensions Committee. We obtain the information
through the Registrar of Mutual Assistance and not directly through the abovementioned
bodies. The milk is not supplied before investigation is made except
in cases of emergency, when it is supplied for a period not exceeding a week.
The form is scrutinised and checked by a second clerk before it is signed by
the clerk in charge.
The approximate quantity of milk distributed together with the cost was:—
