Very few children died under 5 years of age—nine only—or 7.7 per cent., were
under five.

21 belonged to St. George-in-the-East.
44 belonged to Mile End Old Town.
23 belonged to the Whitechapel District.
Cancer.
244 deaths were due to Cancer, or 10 more than in the previous year.
52 belonged to the Limehouse District.
36 belonged to St. George-in-the-East.
107 belonged to Mile End Old Town.
49 belonged to the Whitechapel District.
Infantile Mortality.
663 infants died under 1 year of age or 231 more than in the previous year.
173 belonged to the Limehouse District, or at the rate of 86 per 1,000 births.
116 belonged to St. George-in-the-East, or at the rate of 98 per 1,000 births.
275 belonged to Mile End Old Town, or at the rate of 84 per 1,000 births.
99 belonged to the Whitechapel District, or at the rate of 98 per 1,000 births.
The infantile mortality for the whole Borough was 90 per 1,000 births, while
that for London was 75 per 1,000.
Of the 81 illegitimate births, 32 died before they were a twelvemonth old, or
at the rate of 390 per 1,000 births.
This is a very high infantile mortality when compared with that of 86 per 1,000
among the legitimate births in the Borough.
