The disease was made a notifiable one in London on September 1st, 1911.
15 cases were notified during the year : 3 belonged to the Limehouse District,
10 belonged to Mile End Old Town, and 2 to the Whitechapel District.
The schools were communicated with in the usual way, but the other children
were not prevented from attending school, and the premises were disinfected.
In all the cases the patients were notified by hospital physicians, and most
of them became in-patients of those institutions.
I have personally visited all the premises, and examined all the patients who
were at their own homes and not at the Hospitals.
8 were notified in September, 3 in October, 1 in November, 1 in August and
1 in May ; 1 child only attended school, 13 out of the 15 children notified being
under 3 years of age.
W. S., aged 2, of Jupps Road, was in the London Hospital for a fortnight.
His left leg is weak and he is lame. There are 6 children in this house, 4 going to
school. One of the children had Diphtheria some time ago, the tracheotomy tube
still being in position.
J. B., aged 6, of King John Street, was 9 weeks in the hospital, and 6 weeks
in a convalescent home. There are 5 children in this family, but 2 only are old
enough to go to school. Both arms and legs are affected. The speech is slow.
F. A., aged 2, of Eric Street, was an out-patient at the Hospital. One leg
is affected and the child is not able to walk. The rest of the children were not kept
away from School. The parents informed me that they have no friends in London
that they visit.
E. M., aged 2½, of Jupps Road. This family has moved and left no address.
I am unable to trace them.
F. S., aged 1½, of West India Dock Road, was in the hospital for a few days
only. Right leg is still very weak, but the child is progressing.
A. C., aged 9 months, of Peabody Buildings, Glasshouse Street, was living with
his grandparents at the above address, but has since gone to Hendon. This was
the only child in the family. The brother of the grandfather of the patient
suffered from infantile paralysis.
T. S., aged 1, of Brunswick Buildings, Goulston Street, was 4 months in
the Hospital. The right leg and right arm are affected. One child attends
school.
