REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH AND PUBLIC ANALYST.
FOR THE YEAR 1912.
To the Mayor, Aldermen, and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Stepney.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have much pleasure in submitting to you my twelfth Annual Report, which
deals with the Vital and Sanitary Statistics of the Borough of Stepney for the year
1912.

Population,

The resident population of the Borough of Stepney estimated to the middle of the year was 277,315; distributed as follows:—

Lime house District53,132
St. George -in -the- East46,811
Mile End Old Town110,986
White chapel District66,386
277,315

I have called attention in previous reports to the question of overcrowding
and want of house accommodation. This was at its worst in 1901, when there were
hardly any empty houses in the district. A reaction set in, more houses became
vacant and it became easier to deal with overcrowding. There was quite a slump
in house property which reached its height in 1908, as is seen by the following figures
which the Borough Treasurer has supplied me with
In the quarter ended March 31st, 1904, the number of empty houses was 1,073.
In the quarter ended March 31st, 1906, the number of empty houses was 1,670.
In the quarter ended March 31st, 1907, the number of empty houses was 2,865.
In the quarter ended March 31st, 1908, the number of empty houses was 2,944.
