Alcoholism.
The number of deaths due to Alcoholism and Cirrhosis of the Liver was 52,
or 4 more than in each of the previous two years.
13 belonged to the Limehouse District, or at the rate of .22 per 1,000.
6 belonged to St. George-in-the-East, or at the rate of .11 per 1,000.
19 belonged to Mile End Old Town, or at the rate of .16 per 1,000.
11 belonged to the Whitechapel District, or at the rate of .17 per 1,000.
The death-rate throughout the whole Borough was .16 per 1,000 of the
population.
As I have mentioned in previous reports, the death-rate from Alcoholism
is gradually and steadily declining in the Borough, as is shown in the following
table, although it is slightly higher in 1909 than in the previous year:—
In 1901 the death-rate was .33 per 1,000 of the population.
In 1902 the death-rate was .33 per 1,000 of the population.
In 1903 the death-rate was .25 per 1,000 of the population.
In 1904 the death-rate was .31 per 1,000 of the population.
In 1905 the death-rate was .21 per 1,000 of the population.
In 1906 the death-rate was .23 per 1,000 of the population.
In 1907 the death-rate was .15 per 1,000 of the population.
In 1908 the death-rate was .15 per 1,000 of the population.
In 1909 the death-rate was .16 per 1,000 of the population.
Cancer.
The deaths due to Cancer were 202, or 21 less than in the previous year.
This corresponds to a death-rate of .64 per 1,000.
45 belonged to the Limehouse District, or at the rate of .76 per 1,000.
28 belonged to St. George-in-the-East, or at the rate of .52 per 1,000.
75 belonged to Mile End Old Town, or at the rate of .62 per 1,000.
54 belonged to the Whitechapel District, or at the rate of .66 per
1,000.
