MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH AND PUBLIC ANALYST.
FOR THE YEAR 1909.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Stepney.
Gentlemen,
I have much pleasure in submitting to you my ninth Annual Report, which
deals with the Vital and Sanitary Statistics of the Borough of Stepney for the year
1909.

Population.

The resident population of the Borough of Stepney estimated to the middle of the year was 312,525; distributed as follows:—

Births.
The total number of births registered during the year was 9,502, or 622
less than in the preceding year. They consisted of 4,839 males and 4,663 females.
1,918 belonged to the Limehouse District, or at the rate of 32.5 per 1,000
of the population.
1.781 belonged to St. George-in-the-East, or at the rate of 33.4 per 1,000
of the population.
3,674 belonged to Mile End Old Town, or at the rate of 30.8 per 1,000
of the population.
2,129 belonged to the Whitechapel District, or at the rate of 26.0 per 1,000
of the population.
The birth-rate throughout the whole Borough was 30.4 per 1,000 of the population,
while that for the whole of London was 24.2 per 1,000.
