Births.
the total number of births registered during the year was 10,668, which
consisted of 5,464 males and 5,204 females.
1,893 belonged to the Limehouse District, or at the rate of 32.3 per
1,000 of the population.
2,134 belonged to the St. George's District, or at the rate of 41.7 per
1,000 of the population.
4,122 belonged to the Mile End District, or at the rate of 36.4 per
1,000 of the population.
2,519 belonged to the Whitechapel District, or at the rate of 30.9 per
1,000 of the population.
The birth-rate throughout the whole Borough was 34.7 per 1,000 of the
population, whilst that of London as a whole was 26.5 per 1,000.
The birth-rate in the Borough is slightly higher (T per 1,000) than in the
previous year, while that of London is .6 per 1,000 less.

others within the Metropolis; and the birth-rate in this Borough is the highest
in London.
The birth-rate of St. George's is higher than that of the other three
districts, and is also slightly higher than in the preceding year.
The birth-rate is higher than in the previous year in each of the four
districts, with the exception of that of the Whitechapel District, where it is
1.5 per 1,000 less. The difference is more marked in Mile End Old Town
with an excess of 2.4 per 1,000 as compared with the previous year.
The birth-rate of St. George's is 15.2 per 1,000 higher than that of
London as a whole. This is probably due—as I have pointed out on a former
occasion—to the fact that the old residents in recent years have moved into
the suburbs, and their houses have been taken by aliens, who are chiefly of the
child-bearing age. Some of the old houses have been demolished and large
dwellings have been erected instead. These model-dwellings are now almost
entirely occupied by Jews. When old residents leave a neighbourhood and
