The death-rate throughout the Borough was .07 per 1,000 of the population.
The death-rate in the whole of London was .06 per 1,000.
Typhus Fever.
One case of Typhus Fever was notified from the Whitechapel District.
The patient recovered.
Erysipelas.
410 cases were notified and 72 were removed to various Hospitals and
Infirmaries.
62 occurred in the Limehouse District. Three died.
82 occurred in St. George's. Two died.
126 occurred in Mile End. Five died.
140 occurred in the Whitechapel District. All recovered.
Erysipelas is not regarded by the public generally, nor by the majority of
general practitioners as a disease which is liable to be spread by personal
contact. It is doubtful whether a number of the cases notified as such, can be
considered as Erysipelas. It used to be a common occurrence in this Borough
to see a person notified as Erysipelas walking in the street, a day or two after
the date on the certificate. I have recently insisted on every case being
isolated, and the premises afterwards disinfected.
These were 94 fewer cases notified in 1906 than in the previous year,
In a number of Metropolitan Boroughs the premises are not disinfected
after Erysipelas.
It is a common occurrence to receive a second certificate from another
practitioner notifying the same case of Erysipelas. On one occasion in May
last, I received four notifications from four Medical men within two days
referring to the same case. The first notification was received from the Lock
Hospital. After being returned home in an ambulance, the patient went to
the London Hospital. The medical attendant at the hospital notified the case,
but did not admit him to the wards. On the following day, the parish Doctor
notified the case and removed him to the Infirmary. He was finally notified
on the same day by the Medical Superintendent on being admitted to the
St. George's Infirmary.
