SOCIAL WELFARE SERVICES.
The various services to old age pensioners, provided by the Borough
Council on a steadily expanding scale since 1947, have continued to be run
by this Department, and are proving even more popular than before, with the
Joint Welfare Committee still managing to cover the increasing expenditure
on non-statutory contributions. An additional £80 of this expense was
donated by the Shoreditch Association as a result of its annual Carnival.
Our register of pensioners continues to contain almost 4,000 names,
although the deletions are more readily obtained here than are the new additions,
despite the enthusiasm of the three members of our staff occupied in
visiting old people. Nevertheless, our visitors have again exceeded a total
of 4,000 visits during the year.
