Of the samples of milk taken, one was found to be deficient in
milk fat and one was deficient in solids-not-fat. Warning letters were
sent.
A sample of bread submitted was found to contain a partly burnt
cigarette end which had been baked in the loaf. Legal proceedings
were instituted and the defendant was fined £3 and ordered to pay two
guineas costs.
Seven samples offered for sale as buttered rolls were found
to be spread with margarine or with a mixture of margarine and butter.
In one instance where the shop-keeper had previously been warned,
legal proceedings were taken and he was fined £2 and ordered to
pay five guineas costs, and in all other cases warning letters were
sent.
An informal sample of butter drops was found to contain no
appreciable amount of butter, and after formal sample taken proved
to be similar, legal proceedings were commenced, but summons had
to be withdrawn owing to wrong information being given by the occupier
of the shop which was later found to have been closed.
Warning letters were sent in respect of two samples of liver
sausage which were found to contain excessive sulphur dioxide.
