33.
The number of factory and warehouse canteens in the Borough is
ill, and regular inspections were made of these premises by the
Food Premises Inspector and the District Sanitary Inspectors. A good
standard of hygiene in canteens has been maintained.
ANTI-FLY CAMPAIGN.
Action was again taken by the Department to combat this Public
Health menace. By arrangement, and with the co-operation of the
Transport and Cleansing Superintendent, all dustbins and dust chutes
are dusted during the fly-breeding season with Gammexane after the
receptacles have been emptied by the Council's dustmen.
Owners of blocks of flatswere also encouraged to take action
against flies by purchasing insecticide supplied by the Public
Health Department at cost price Fly sprays were also sold to
occupieis of food premises Observations were kept on bombed sites,
and action was taken to prevent any putrescible matter from becoming
a medium for fly brooding and many offensive deposits such as dead
dogs, cats and other putrescible matter were disinfected and removed
by the disinfecting staff.
The incidence of flies was noticeably very low in 1952.
FRBE WASHING FACILITIES.
Free washing facilities are installed in every public sanitary
convenience in the Borough These facilities are being made use of by
an increasing number of persons. It may be worth recording that the
Shoreditch Borough Council were one of the pioneers in providing free
washing facilities to the public at sanitary conveniences, and it is
pleasing to record that many local authorities have now followed suit.
With the ever piesent danger of serious typhoid infection and the
apparent inciease of cases of mild food poisoning, it must be apparent
that the value of free facilities to wash the hands after using the
water closet must be a sound preventative in the transference of
infection.
