V. SOCIAL WELFARE SERVICE.
The Borough Council's Welfare Services steadily increased in popularity
and were on the same lines as indicated more fully in my annual report for 1950.
The difficulty of keeping the Holiday Home staff employed in the winter was
more completely overcome by the increased numbers sent at that time of year for
recuperative holidays through the medium of King Edward's Hospital Fund with
the help of County authorities and Almoners spread over the whole area covered
by that Fund.
The numbers of persons attending the Holiday Home at Copthorne during 1952
were as follows :-
Adults 167
10-18 years 4
5-10 years 35
9 months - 5 years 101
Under 9 months 39
Old People 209
Conference members 22
The Friday Club at Hoxton Hall, where entertainment by trained artistes is
provided, became so popular that the hall was overcrowded at nearly every
session, despite spells of really inclement weather. The "Bell" club was
already full to capacity, so that it could not expand further, but the other
full-time club in Curtain Road (Moorfields) is very slow in expansion, despite
various attempts at propaganda, and the provision of first-class amenities. The
other clubs continued to be well-patronised, and all had their usual outings to
country, sea and pantomime, partly from funds resulting from their excellent
handicraft work, and partly furnished from the Joint Welfare Fund (run by a
Committee composed of members of both the Borough Welfare Committee and various
voluntary bodies).

The average attendances at the Old People's Clubs during the year are shown in the following table.
