homes, and it is hoped that these steps will prove successful in reducing and keeping
down the death rate from this group of diseases.
The causes of the deaths of infants under one year of age, together with age and
ward distributions, are given in Table No. 20 facing page 28. Table No. 20a, which
was omitted from the report for 1937, is also included in order that the statistics
may be complete.

MATERNAL MORTALITY
The number of Shoreditch women whose deaths were primarily classified to
childbirth during the year was 3. This gives a maternal mortality rate per 1,000 live
births of 2.54 and per 1,000 total births (i.e., still births included) of 2.46.
The particulars of these deaths, classified according to age and cause, are given
in Table No. 21.
