The reason for this decrease is composite: a decreasing population (which
according to the Registrar-General has fallen by 7,770 in the three years
under review) is now spread out in a slightly greater number of houses; at the
same time both the London County Council and the Borough Council, and also
to a limited extent voluntary housing societies, have increased both the floor space
and the number of rooms available for many of the more grossly overcrowded cases.
In addition many families have been accommodated in larger type buildings as
a result of their own efforts.
The present position with regard to overcrowded families is shown in table
No. 131, and the corresponding information with regard to the number of " persons "
concerned is shown in table No. 132.
