The Council at its meeting on 17th January, 1937, decided to purchase compulsorily
the following blocks of property under powers given them by section 74
of the Housing Act, 1936:—
(1) Property bounded by Loanda Street, Dunston Street, Stean Street and
Lee Street; and
(2) property bounded by Loanda Street, Dunston Road, Stean Street and
Dunston Street.
The properties, of which there are 102, have a total area of approximately 2f
acres and comprise 91 dwellings, 2 shops, 2 dairies, 1 cafe, 2 licensed premises, and 4
workshops. It was later decided to omit the two licensed premises from the order.
On the 21st December, 1937, the Council approved plans for this site. The plans will
provide two blocks of flats (one on each side of Duston Street), a garden for the use of
residents of the estate, a children's playground, and a site which will be reserved for a
hall for social purposes.
. The following areas in which clearance orders were made in 1936 were demolished
during the year:—
Dunston Street, Bateman's Place, Reliance Square, Dereham Place,
Socrates Place, Holywell Place.
74 families who were resident in the Bateman's Place, Dereham Place, French
Place, Holywell Place, Reliance Square and Socrates Place clearance areas were dealt
with as follows:—
33 rehoused by the borough council.
20 „ „ London County Council.
3 „ „ Stepney Housing Association.
18 secured own accommodation.
The Housing Committee in October, 1937, adjourned sine die the consideration
of the representations made in 1936 in respect of the undermentioned areas !—
Lees Buildings (13 houses).
Renous Court (9 houses).
Bartlett Buildings (10 houses).
Market Street (27 houses).
Brunswick Street (5 houses).
Bevenden Street (11 houses).
Teale Street area.
Plans for the erection of a block of ten four-roomed flats on land at the rear of
Teale Street Dwellings were approved by the Borough Council on 16th February,
1937. This land was required for housing purposes at the time of the erection of the
dwellings. The flats, to be named 21-30, Halley House, will have accommodation
for a maximum of 75 persons, and are reserved for the accommodation of persons
resident in the Loanda Street Compulsory Purchase area.
