FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ACT, 1901.
The number of workshops, exclusive of bakehouses, on the register at the end
of the year was 1,447. Of these 233 had been added, 261 having been removed.
A classification of the workshops registered is contained in the summary of proceedings
under the Act which is appended. Some 3,506 visits of inspection were made
in connection with workshops and 564 to factories.
Four communications were received from the Factory Inspector relative to the
establishment of 206 new workshops in the Borough. As the result of inspection 169
were found in a satisfactory condition, and 10 were not in use. With regard to the
remainder sanitary notices were necessary; in 9 instances for cleansing, one on
account of obstructed urinal, 6 for additional w.c.'s, 1 on account of defective w.c.,
1 for a defective roof, and 2 for defective dust receptacles.
Seventy-six written intimations were received from the Factory Inspector relating
to insanitary conditions and infringements of the law as to public health in connection
with 20 factories and 56 workshops. The chief insanitary conditions to which the
Factory Inspector directed attention were: dirty conditions of walls and ceilings
in 21, defective and insufficient w.c. accommodation in 46, absence of proper ventilation
in one, defective sink waste in one, defective roofs in nine, overcrowding in
two, foul urinal in one, smoke nuisance in one, accumulation of rubbish in two,
an absence of watercloset accommodation in one, and in one instance there was a
defective dust receptacle.
Including those brought under the notice of the department by the Factory
Inspector 464 workshops were dealt with, 476 sanitary notices being served upon
the parties responsible for their proper sanitary upkeep.

The number of factories under observation for insanitary conditions during the
year was 62, and in connection with them some 62 sanitary notices were served.
