with the system 153 gullies were fixed and some 90 manholes with numerous
ventilation and soil pipes were constructed or reconstructed.
The work was commenced at the end of 1923 and was in progress throughout
1924, being completed in December and was a very extensive undertaking.
In Table IX (Appendix) is contained a Summary giving particulars as to the work
done for the abatement of nuisances and for improving the dwellings of the people
in the Borough, which has been compiled by the Senior Inspector from particulars
supplied by the Sanitary Inspecfors. The Summary includes the work carried out
to comply with the provisions of the Factory and Workshops Act, 1901, and also
that done in connection with the drains and sanitary arrangements of new buildings.
Most of the work done was carried out to comply with the requirements stated on
the intimation notices served. Statutory Notices under the Public Health (London)
Act, 1891, were served by order of the Sanitary Authority upon parties responsible
for the abatement of nuisances and for otherwise not complying with the requirements
of the Act in 1,107 instances. For non-compliance with Statutory Notices and other
infringements of the Acts relating to public health, and of byelaws made thereunder
and other offences, proceedings were taken before the Magistrate in 91 instances.
A Summary is given on page 67 (Appendix) showing the results of these proceedings.

was not necessary to report any of them to the Sanitary Authority for further action.
FUR SKIN DRESSERS.
At the end of the year there were four premises upon the register. They were
subject to regular inspection and some 18 visits were made in connection with them.
During the year it was necessary to serve six Statutory Notices for cleansing. Five
of these were duly complied with. In one instance a summons had to be taken out
in order to get what was required done. One guinea costs were allowed by the Court.
RAG AND BONE DEALERS.
Some eighteen premises to which the byelaws under Section 9 of the London
County Council (General Powers) Act, 1908, are applicable were on the register at
the end of the year. In the great majority the businesses carried on thereat are
only in a small way. They were all subject to inspection and some 48 visits were
made by the inspectors in connection with them. In four instances it was necessary
