SMALLPOX.
Attention was directed to a few cases, which were suspectcd, but there is no
reason for believing that there were any genuine cases of the disease in Shoreditch
during the year. There were only four cases certified in the whole of London. In
certain localities in the Midlands and in the Northern Counties of England cases
were fairly numerous but the type of the disease was very mild and the mortality low.
SCARLET FEVER.
The cases certified numbered 366, of which 49 or 13.4 per cent. were subsequently
not regarded as scarlet fever, a figure which is greatly in excess of the average.

The distribution of the cases certified, and the deaths amongst males and females in the Borough and its eight Wards during the year were as shown in the subjoined table:—

at the rate of 3.4 per 1,000 inhabitants, being somewhat below the average for the

in Moorfields and highest in Haggerston Ward, being 0.6 in the former, as compared
with 5.7 in the latter.
The deaths were at the rate of 0.02 per 1,000 population. The case.mortality
was at the rate of 0.6 per cent. of the cases certified, which is below the average for
the previous 10 years. Amongst children under five years there were 157 of the
cases. and the two fatal cases belong to this age group, the case mortality being 1.2,
or allowing for errors in diagnosis 1.6 per cent. of the cases certified.
