10 were visited and all found satisfactory. Inspector Stokes had 5 under observation,
in connection with 3 of which sanitary notices were necessary for cleansing
and repairs. On Inspector Wright's district, 7 were visited and all found in a
satisfactory sanitary condition. Inspector Pratt had 10 under observation in
connection with which 4 sanitary notices were necessary mainly for cleansing and
repairs. Inspector Chapman visited 10, of which 2 required cleansing.
Altogether 55 fried fish shops were under inspection during the year and 13
sanitary notices were served in connection with them mainly for cleansing and
repairs.
STREET MARKETS AND FOOD.
The usual supervision was exercised by the Sanitary Officers in accordance
with the instructions of the Borough Council as regards food exposed for sale.
The following were seized or surrendered and destroyed as unfit for the food
of man during the year :—
Salted herrings 1 box, herrings 150, plaice 91 lbs., tripe 2½ cwts., pigs' kidneys
2i Cwts., liver 3 lbs., rabbits 40, chickens 25, pork 19 lbs., mutton 1½ cwts., mutton
loins and breasts 3 cwts., mutton 3 necks, scraggs of mutton 1 stone 12 lbs., aitch
bone 10 lbs., beef | cwt., beef in brine 80 lbs, pressed pork 7¼ lbs.; tomatoes
64 lbs., oranges 236, bananas 1 case.
In one case proceedings were taken against a vendor for exposing for sale
61 lbs. of rotten tomatoes; he was fined £5 with 23s. costs. They were seized by
Inspector Stokes.
Another vendor was fined £5 with 2s. costs for having in his possession
19 lbs. of stinking pork intended for use in making German sausage. The pork
was seized by Inspector Stokes.
A third was fined £5 with 23s. C03ts for having deposited on his premises
some 80 lbs. of beef intended for human food the same being unsound. The beef
was found in a brine tub in a shed behind the shop and was taken possession of
by Inspector Stokes.
In a fourth case where 36 rabbits and 4 other rabbits in pieces, the same being
exposed for sale and uufit for food, were seized by Inspector Pratt, the defendant
was fined £5 with 12s. 6d. costs.
In one case proceedings were taken against the owner of a barrow for not
removing the same, in accordance with the requirements of the Council's regulations
dealing with the removal of stalls and barrows from the market streets.
The summons was withdrawn.
SALE OP FOOD AND DRUGS ACTS.
The reports of the Public Analyst, Mr. H. G. Harrison, M.A., show that
768 samples were submitted to him for analysis during the year. This number
is at the rate of 7 per 1,000 inhabitants.
