soles, 2 trunks and about 100lbs. of skate, 3 barrels and 1 case of haddocks, 2 barrels
of escalops, 1 box of rock salmon, 1 case of mixed fish, 6 sacks of greens, 2 barrels
of apples, 1 crate of bananas, 2 barrels of grapes, and 16 boxes of tomatoes. There
were no instances in which police-court proceedings were necessary.
SALE OF FOOD AND DRUGS ACTS.
The reports of the public analyst, Sir Thomas Stevenson, show that during the year
536 samples were submitted to him for analysis under the above acts. This number
works out at the rate of one sample for every 215 persons belonging to the Borough,
or 4.6 samples per 1,000 inhabitants per annum. Of the samples, 108 were taken by
Inspector Lear, 119 by Inspector Firth, 108 by Inspector Jordan, 89 by Inspector Langstone,
and 110 by Inspector Clements. Two samples of butter were taken by a private
person in the third quarter of the year.

The samples taken comprised 332 of milk, 180 butter, 6 lard, 5 sausages, 4 coffee,
2 margarine, 2 bread and butter, 2 golden syrup, 2 treacle, and 1 of almond oil.
Of the milk samples 69 or 20.8 per cent. were found not to be genuine, as compared
with 23.5 in 1904, and 22.0 per cent. in 1903. In the subjoined table are shown
the numbers of samples of milk taken during the four quarters of the year with the
numbers and percentages of those found not to be genuine.
*Four summonses in respect to boric acid in sausages were not proceeded with by order of
the Council.
