registered workshops, and 34 in connection with factories where insanitary conditions
were reported.
The communications received from the Factory Inspector as to the establishment
of new workshops within the Borough numbered 34, and referred to 81 workshops
mainly for the purposes of the various branches of the furniture trade, and for dress,
leather and feather work. On inspection 54 were found to be in a satisfactory sanitary
condition, three could not be found or the addresses were not in Shoreditch, and in
the remainder, insanitary conditions more or less serious required attention.
Written intimations were received from the Factory Inspector numbering 84, referring
to insanitary conditions and infringements of the law relating to public health
in connection with 132 workshops and workplaces. The chief insanitary conditions
mentioned on the intimations from the Factory Inspector were: want of proper attention
to cleanliness, walls and ceilings being in a dirty state in 79 instances,
dirty and dilapidated state of the workshop in 15, defective or insufficient
water closet accommodation in 22, want of proper separate sanitary accommodation for

were all duly inspected by the officers of the Borough Council, and the necessary steps
were taken to remove the insanitary conditions to which attention was directed as well

inspectors.
The results of the action taken upon the intimations of the factory inspectors were

inspector some 379 workshops, workplaces and factories, exclusive of bakehouses, places
where food is prepared, and other workplaces which are referred to later in this report,
were dealt with during the year. The defects and insanitary conditions were similar in
character to those already mentioned. In the inspection of workshops and workplaces
attention is particularly directed to cleanliness, ventilation, drainage, and the provision
of sufficient and suitable accommodation in the way of sanitary conveniences.
Including the premises brought under the notice of the sanitary authority by the
factory inspectors, 511 factories, workshops and workplaces, exclusive of bakehouses,
and places where food is prepared for sale, were dealt with, and altogether some 463
