The rooms are of very fair size, and the amount of accommodation is ample when
compared with the standards contained in the Council's bye-laws as to houses let in
lodgings. The room space is, however, more abundant in class A than in class B, and
on the whole the conditions associated with residence in the former class of dwellings
are, from a health point of view, distinctly superior to those of the latter.
A few remarks may now be made in respect to the statistical information available
bearing upon the health of the inhabitants of these dwellings.

The births registered during the year together with the birth-rates, are set out

below:—

The birth-rate for these dwellings is high, especially so in class A. In class B,
however, it is lower than that for the whole Borough, although considerably above the
average for the metropolis. A point which may be noted in connection with the births
is the proportion of deaths attributed to prematurity. For the whole of the dwellings
these deaths were at the rate of 27.5 per 1,000 births. In classes A and B the rates
were 22.4 and 50 respectively, whilst for the whole Borough it was only 18.1 per 1,000
births.
The deaths of infants under one year of age per 1,000 births were as follows:
140 for the whole of the dwellings, 134 for class A, and 166 for class B. The infantile
mortality was in class A, greatly below that of the Borough as a whole, and only a
little above that of the metropolis. In class B it was a little above the average for
the Borough.

In the subjoined table are given the deaths and death-rates from certain causes for the dwellings and the corresponding death-rates for the whole Borough, so that they may be compared:—
