SIR and GENTLEMEN,
This report deals with the public health, sanitary condition and vital statistics of
the Borough of Shoreditch for the year ending December 31st, 1904.
POPULATION.
The number of persons in the Borough is estimated at 117,360, as compared with
117,740 in 1903, and 117,948 in 1902. The population is distributed in the four registration
sub-districts as follows:—Shoreditch South, 15,650; Hoxton New Town, 29,400;
Hoxton Old Town, 26,330; Haggerston, 45,980. The population of the New Town
registration sub-district includes the inmates of the Holborn Union Workhouse, which is
situate in that sub-district. These, which numbered at the 1901 census 1,375, are not
regarded for certain statistical purposes as persons belonging to Shoreditch, and are
accordingly excluded for these purposes; the population of the New Town district becoming
28,125, and the population for the whole of the Borough 115,985. The demolition
of dwelling houses occupied by persons of the working class was not so extensive as
in 1903.
The registration sub-districts were altered and re-arranged during the year, being
reduced from, four to three in number. The new arrangement came into operation on
September 1st. The new sub-districts are as follows:-—Shoreditch South, consisting
of Moorfields, Church, and Hoxton Wards, having a population at the last census of
46,362; Shoreditch North-West, consisting of Wenlock and Whitmore Wards, with a
population of 36,127; and Shoreditch North East, consisting of Kingsland, Haggerston,
and Acton Wards, having a census population of 36,148. For statistical purposes
the old arrangement of the registration sub-districts was adhered to until the end of the
