The schools in the foregoing table are more numerous than hitherto owing to the
increase in the number of schools which are now required to comply with the provisions
of the School Management Code of the London County Council in consequence of the
coming into operation of the recent Education Act. The number of exclusions on
account of infectious illness in the aggregate show an increase as compared with that
of the previous year, but taking into consideration the number of schools added to the
list it is probable that less time was lost on account of infectious illness in 1904
than in 1903. Measles, whooping cough and chickenpox were the chief causes of
exclusion.
